Dear xx:
When I was two years old my family relocated from the New World, Canada, tothe Old, and since then I have journeyed to places as far off as Rome, Egypt, and Thailand, among many others. Everywhere I travelled brought upon me a newwave of fresh fascination; not only in the cultural differences I noticed, butin the circumstances, traditions, and history that shaped them. Returning home,I became curious about what had moulded my own culture as I knew it. This wasthe beginning of a lifelong interest in material culture and historicalheritage.
This fascination soon developed into a passion – particularly when studyingthe medieval period. I wrote my IB Extended Essay on how the changingsocio-political climate in England from the 11th to 15th centuries led tolinguistic and sociolinguistic changes. Having chosen a subject that fascinatedme, I found myself going beyond the requirements, organizing visits to theBritish Library and studying contemporary manuscripts. I had to familiarizemyself with Middle English – and to some degree Old English and Old French – andmy study of the original manuscripts was one of my most inspiring educationalexperiences to date.
Soon I found that it was not enough to know about the past, I wanted alsoto learn where our knowledge of the past had come from. It was this curiositythat led me to an interest in archaeology. Thus when the school nominated me fora travel fellowship (a grant given to a student who most showed “courage andstrength as an individual, genuineness, generosity, and high personal andacademic standards”) I proposed to travel to Romania to work on anarchaeological dig. In presenting me with the award, the judges praised my goodplanning and organization, and enthusiasm for the subject.
I travelled to Romania in August 20xx to join an excavation of aTransylvanian castle dating from the 14th century. During my time there Ireceived hands on experience of archaeological techniques, firsthand informationfrom experts regarding practice and theory, and a wonderful look at the historyand culture of a country to which I had never before travelled. Although I hadfeared I might find the work tedious, I enjoyed every second of it. Theexperience heightened my interest in archaeology, and travelling alone helped medevelop my maturity, organization, and independence.
My interests go beyond the historical, however. I have a strong creativeside, and study drama both in school and as an extracurricular activity, producing and acting in a number of productions. I also play the piano, havingtaken it up at the age of five, and enjoy composing pieces of all genres. I wasrecently commissioned by the arts department of my school to compose a score fora production of Animal Farm. On the other end of the academic spectrum, I amadept at logic and rational thinking, coming top in my school for two yearsrunning in the UK Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad. I think that such a varietyof understanding is useful in allowing me a broad approach to problem solvingand research.
My main goal in attending university is to eventually advance myunderstanding to such a degree where I could teach the subject at universitylevel. As part of my Diploma Programme, I frequently participate in communityservice projects in which I help senior citizens learn how to use computers, andteach drama to children with disabilities, and in doing so have developed betterinterpersonal skills and a strong teaching technique. These have been furtheredby my experience as a counsellor at a summer camp in Canada, and I am certainthese skills would work as an advantage should I ever teach history orarchaeology myself.

Dear xxx:
I am a senior science student in XX Province ? Middle School ?. I hope to realize my dream of studying with your school. Thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule to review my self-recommended materials.?
I have always had a dream. I dream of studying in XXX, dreaming of being moisturized by XX with a long history and profound cultural heritage.
I had excellent academic performance since I was a child. With my own efforts, I was admitted to Jingdezhen No. 2 Middle School and entered the Olympiad class with the citys tenth outstanding high school entrance examination results. After three years of training, I have grown from a simple ignorant boy to a high school student who loves life, pursues knowledge, is energetic, compassionate, and has a comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, and physical fitness.? ???
I love life, and I have always been confident and hopeful in life. In this beautiful world, I enjoy the beauty of spring flowers, the warmth of autumn moon, the passion of summer rain, and the purity of winter snow. I am sunshine, I am happy, I love every river, every mountain, every person, and I love everything I have. Even in the third year of high school, I am painful and happy. I also hope to pass on happiness to everyone around me. I cheer for the strong and shed tears for the weak. I believe in the fragrance of roses in the hands of others, and the truth, goodness and beauty in the world. For this reason, people around me like me very much and call me "Pistachio".
I pursue knowledge with the same enthusiasm. I am eager to understand the human mind, to explore the manufacturing process of robots, to understand the causes of the financial crisis, and to know the content of the "Six-Party Talks". So I love learning and reading. Wandering in the sea of books, constantly thinking, and constantly comprehending, the joy is endless. The pursuit of knowledge has not only increased my knowledge and broadened my horizons; it also cultivated my interest and improved my temperament; it also allowed me to nurture my temperament and balance my mind.?
My energy stems from the love of life and the passion for knowledge. In terms of study, I work hard and have excellent grades. The grades of the high school quality inspection examinations are among the best in the school. I won the second prize in the 24th High School Chemistry Competition (provincial competition area) this year. In addition to studying well, I have been serving as the deputy monitor and also actively participate in various activities organized by the school. I can be seen in basketball games, football games, campus singer contests, social practice and other activities, which not only improves my ability, but also exercises my courage.?
But I know that I am only "the little lotus with sharp horns". The road to becoming a talent is long and I must continue to forge and improve myself. If I am fortunate enough to be able to enter my dream palace for further study, I will definitely search from top to bottom and sharpen myself into an outstanding talent with unique cultural taste, extraordinary talents and good comprehensive qualities, who dare to dare to fight.?
So here I implore the leaders of your school to give me a chance to realize my dream.

Dear xx:
I believe that university offers an excellent opportunity to further mylearning in a more challenging environment and to deepen my understanding of theknowledge and skills I already have.
I am keen on all aspects of business, but am particularly interested inaccountancy/finance and management.
Through my current study I have learned to be more computer literate andhow to effectively manage my time. I became interested in accountancy whenstudying the finance unit in business studies and I am now completing an Aslevel in this subject as I felt this would give me a sound footing when startingmy university course
I gained an As level in sociology which has sharpened my ability to analyseinformation in depth, which is vital for management. Sociology has also helpedme appreciate people’s different needs in society, which I see as an importantfeature in business
One responsibility that I held for a year was the role of the middle schoolprefect. This helped me to gain an insight into typical basic managementresponsibilities. In Year 13 I then became a senior prefect and our role withinthe school is to help out with such activities as fund raising and the schoolfate
Taking part in the Young Enterprise scheme taught me many skills; how towork independently and with a team which was one of the keys to our company’ssuccess as “best company”
I attended a young enterprise presentation day where we were privileged tolisten to guests speaking about becoming an entrepreneur. This brief courseinspired me with a wish to one day own my own business. I feel that anaccountancy/finance and management course will help me to place myself in thesector in which I am most interested and give me the aspiration to eventuallyachieve this
In the sixth form work experience is optional but I believed I would gaingreat benefit from such a placement. I was fortunate to get a two-week placementin Lloyds TSB bank in Nottingham. I was given a great deal of responsibility; mytime was divided into various departments such as the customer servicedepartment, finance department, balancing accounts with the cashiers. As aresult of my success with Lloyds TSB the manager offered me full time employmentwith training should I decide to take that route
I held a part time job for 2 1/2 years in which I worked as a counterassistant in a busy restaurant in my local town. From this I learned many skillssuch as working in a fast busy environment, handling money and a great deal ofcustomer service and teamwork
In my spare time I enjoy socialising with my friends and family. I enjoyreading and one of my favourite authors is Terry Pratchet. I enjoy music and Ilisten to many different styles. I am particularly interested in IT and much ofmy time is spent researching on the web
From my experiences and personal ambition I am confident that I have thenecessary self-motivation and commitment to succeed in accountancy finance andmanagement and I look forward to taking advantage of all the opportunities thatuniversity life has to offer.

Dear x:
When I was young, my friends always wanted to come round to my house afterschool because my mum would let us paint. We had a big easel, a large supply ofpowder paints, felt tip pens and pencil crayons. I was given the freedom toexpress myself through these means from a very young age and I still find artthe best way to express myself now.
At A-level my photography developed to a high standard and I was offered aplace to do fashion photography at the London College of the Arts. However Idecided not to accept, as I did not wish to commit to photography alone. Idecided to take a place at Doncaster College doing a performing arts nationaldiploma. I was a committed and able student fully engaging with all aspects ofthe course and thoroughly enjoying it also. However as the course was so timeconsuming I had little time to continue painting and drawing and I missed itterribly.
In September 2007 just as I was about to start my second year one of mybest friends committed suicide. I became depressed and felt unable to continueattending. Throughout the following year I used art as a way to express myemotions. It helped me come to terms with what had happened much more thananything else did. Although I had been offered a place to continue my PerformingArts National Diploma the following year I decided to apply for a foundation artand design course.
Doing an art foundation course has given me the freedom and facilities tobegin pursuing what I really enjoy. As a student and an artist I become totallyabsorbed in the piece of work or project I am involved in. I am dedicated andenthusiastic about all of the arts, which I have explored and am eager tocontinue my studies and better myself not only as an artist but also as aperson.
There have been many artists who have inspired me in my own creative path. These include Guy Bourdin, Tracey Emin, and Joesph Cornell, as well as manyothers. Viewing other artists work helps me to better understand Art itself, aswell as helping me to discover which pathway would be best for me. I enjoyregularly attending exhibitions of my favourite artists and also of artists Ihave not previously known.
Installation art is something I would like to explore further as Iprogress. I love the idea of being given a space to make my own.
Seeing other friends go off to University in previous years has beenstrange but I am glad I have waited until this time to apply as I have gainedmaturity and take a more serious attitude towards my work. I am willing to putmore time and effort in because of this.
After completing my degree I would like to pursue a career in art therapy.I feel art gave me a way to express what I was feeling when I could not trulyunderstand it myself. It gave me a release and I would like to help other peopleto be able to use art in the same way.
Yours sincerely,

Dear x:
Who will be there to help you, when your life is turned upside down and youdont know how to carry on, what to do, or whether you can pick yourself up andstart again?
Some of us, if were lucky, have family and friends to hold our hands andguide us through the darkest, most difficult days of our lives. Others are luckyenough to have one or more health professionals, who are not just good at theirjobs, but have passion and compassion; who care about their patients, and whosepatients care is of the utmost importance to them.
As a mother, daughter, wife, divorcee, partner and friend I am fortunateenough to have had support when I needed it and more importantly to have beenable to give support to others who have needed it. Its something which hasalways given me great pleasure - to be there for someone who needs me; to help, listen, advise, suggest ways of solving problems and positive action; encourage, nurture, teach and even to engage in activities with people at certain times intheir lives to help motivate them.
Now that I have a second chance in life to study; to choose a vocationwhich I am passionate about - something rewarding, challenging, inspiring, enjoyable and most of all where I would be able to do good, help people empowerthemselves, change their lives - I know after months of research and talking topeople that OT ticks every box.
When I was 17, I did work experience in a Foyer DHandicapee in Epinal,France, with severely disabled teenagers and young adults. I found it immenselyrewarding and enjoyable, although I later concentrated my studies on music.
Being a parent has meant that certain aspects of me have grown anddeveloped; both in terms of bringing up my children and supporting otherparents. In some ways this fuelled my interest in how the mind works, itsdevelopment, and contributed to a bookshelf on the subject. It has greatlyincreased my patience, intuition and creativity, and I believe I have always hadvery good communication, people and organisational skills, as well as a (highlynecessary!) great sense of humour and positive approach to life.
I am a sympathetic listener, open-minded and tolerant of others lifestylesand I think that along with my problem-solving skills, and desire to helppeople, the range of activities which I am skilled at and enjoy would greatlyaid me in helping people to rehabilitate themselves.
I enjoy listening to and playing music, creative writing, poetry, theatreand the arts - as well as being artistic myself (2 small children are a greatlicence to indulge all forms of art and craft!). I am a great cook; enjoy DIY;keen on growing all things edible; I am IT literate and due to work and lifeadept at organising bills/expenses and general paperwork. I also love theoutdoors and active pursuits, such as mountain-biking, paint-balling, riding theodd elephant and more - with a high degree of enthusiasm! Ive always been verysociable and made friends with people of all ages and walks of life; mainly dueto my sense of humour, general affability and interest in others. Of late it hasgiven me pleasure to help my own friends by teaching one to drive, supportingfriends with children by organising outings with them, and helping a friend whowas very unhappy with her weight by motivating her to go biking/walking/to thegym with me and suggesting easy diet changes.
I have friends within this sector and talking to them has only strengthenedmy belief that this is something I very much want to do, and would be very goodat - plus they seem to think I would make a great OT too! I am a very determinedperson and extremely committed to doing this course. I believe that my pastqualifications prove my academic capabilities and my life experience anddisposition would make me an ideal candidate from a personal point of view.Unbeknownst to me, I have been a skilled helper for most of my life, which Ionly found out recently through personal research and reading.
