on 31st august, was a day like any other schooldays, except that the teachers, instead of being bogged down by assignments were besieged by gifts, flowers and cards from the ever-grateful students.
the hall was beautifully decorated with colourful balloons and streamers. the class chairman and vice-chairman were given the honour to invite the teachers personally to the hall. with each teacher‘s arrival, the students roared and cheered for them.
the concert comprised of dances and song performances that were all put up by our very own talented students! the audience even crooned to the rhythm of the songs. our students also ‘boogied down‘ with slick dance steps while the balinese dancers impressed all with their delightful costumes and grace.
the culmination was of course the last item that was put up by some teachers. they sang a song entitled, "i love to teach the world to sing". it was very heart warming and the performance received the loudest applauds from the audience.
the celebrations usually take place on friday. all pupils show performances to teachers in the hall. pupils present a lot of flowers to teachers. the most interesting thing is that teachers acting as pupils have a lesson with senior pupils acting as teachers. thhey teach, ask questions and play games as a usual lesson. teachers usually behave badly, they are late, chew gum, talk to deskmates and have to be reprimanded and sent to the head teacher who is also

in his article, “our de-vocalised public space”, chan cheow pong deplored the lack of political space here for argument and debate. in “a letter to my dad aka the government” , julie ng siew choo continued this theme.
mr chan cites as proof the lack of anti-us demonstrations over iraq during the recent visit of president george bush in singapore. unfortunately, he did not explain how such demonstrations would have been in our national interest.
on freedom of speech in singapore, mr chan fails to distinguish between form and substance. the substantive issue must surely be whether singaporeans have a right to a different view and whether they have effective avenues to express them.
the answer is clearly“yes”as is amply demonstrated by many singaporeans exercising this right in the forum pages of the newspapers, the internet and elsewhere. the space for political debate has gradually but steadily widened. that mr chan could publish such a critical piece in lianhe zaobao shows this to be so.
as a form, street protests may be an accepted channel for expression in other countries in other circumstances. in singapore we have different but effective avenues for expression.
mr chan is dismissive of them, arguing that because the government defines these alternatives, they are tantamount to restrictions on an individuals political space. mr chan advocates that “society”, but not the elected government, should decide the boundaries of political action and expression.
how is this to be achieved? who is to represent and interpret the will of “society”, if not the elected government? in countries with an elected and functioning government, it is the governments responsibility to define public policy and to govern in accordance with the constitution and the laws of the land, in the interests of the collective and public good.
if they fail to do so effectively, the electorate can vote them out in the next election. every individual in such a society lives within the framework of policies and laws determined by the elected government.
ms julie ng asked why the government still needs to censor films at all, since she is already 21. but censorship is not just a question of age, but societal norms of public decency and morality. even in western countries like the uk and australia, censorship boards decide what can or cannot be shown publicly in films. every country needs to uphold the values affirmed by the majority of its population. in no country is individual freedom absolute.
singapore society must evolve and grow on its own terms and at its own pace. just because we refuse to ape other societies mindlessly in having street demonstrations or in our censorship standards does not make singaporeans a“de-vocalised” lot, or signify any lack of idealism or self-mobilisation.
on the contrary, it underlines a growing maturity and confidence in our own model, which has enabled singapore to grow and prosper.

In order to enhance the international culture exchanges and cooperation, widen the scope of training talent, Dunman High School of Singapore and our school have been sister schools since the August of 2003. The students exchange program takes place every July. It brings us students such a big benefit.
My Singaporean friend, Clair, a lovely girl, was in the first group of Singaporean students who came to our school in August of 2003. My family was her host family and she did home-stay in my home.
During her stay in Haimen, my parents cooked a lot of nice Chinese traditional food for her and she enjoyed it very much. We studied together during the weekdays. At weekends, I showed her around some interesting places in Haimen, Nantong and Shanghai. I also took her to the countryside. She was very kind to little children and lovely animals in my grandparents home in the countryside. She often said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” She stayed in my home for just three days, but we became very good friends. We are the same age. She can speak both English and Chinese. She has the same hobby as I --Listening to music.
Since she went back to Singapore, we have been in touch by e-mail and sometimes we make telephone calls to each other. We often send photos and little presents to each other. I am so excited and happy to get any news from her and so is she.
Three months ago, she took her family to my home. But it was a pity that we had only half a day to be together because her parents had a very important meeting in Shanghai.
She often says we both have Chinese home and Singaporean home. We are so lucky! Friendship is the golden thread that ties the hearts of the entire world!

July was a very wonderful month for me. Because I had a chance to go to Singapore. It was the first time I went to a foreign country. So I had a special experience.
Like the old say, “There is no best in world, but there is better.” I knew it after I had been to Singapore.
Singapore is called “a Garden City”. The weather is warm the whole year. You can walk under the bluish green sky with white clouds in it, and you will be intoxicated with the sweet flowers and green trees and grasses. When you are having meals, a number of little birds will fly to your plate and share food with you. Singapore is a home for both human and animals.
The students in Singapore are talented. They are zealous, polite, brave, united and healthy. In the process of making friends with them, we learnt a lot from each other, although we were from different countries and spoke different languages.
The most profound thing to me is that the students from Human High School are honest. I still remembered the one day that they had to write from memory. They didn’t look around though they sat next to each other. I think it was very good though it was a little thing.
This travel in Singapore made me know a lot. I will never forget it.
