To begin with, many branded products are manufactured by large companies, who usually have a larger budget to hire stars and celebrities to endorse their products. What is worse is that this trend may encourage people to compete over material things, leading to waste of goods and pleasure-seeking lifestyles. People, especially youngsters, tend to pursue better material life and take everything for granted.

Is a famous brand a matter of identity or vanity? There are reasons to explain why more and more people want to buy brand names. However, to my mind, this trend is a negative development.

Firstly, recognized brand names usually have shown a consistency in product quality that has contributed to the evolution of the brand, and for this reason consumers rely on prior experiences or public word-of-mouth when selecting famous brands of clothes, cars and other items. Secondly, people have a desire to fit in, whether at work or in social circles, and so people want to buy famous brands as they believe that the brands will contribute to greater social acceptance. Thirdly, consumers develop loyalty to particular brands that provide a consistent, high-quality experience, and that loyalty is essentially an emotional attachment to a brand.

Finally, if everybody in the society worships the famous brands, then the world may become an unjust place to live in because people will develop a biased contempt to those who cannot afford these brands.

Luxury brands such as BMW, CHANEL, and Rolex are increasingly available and accessible in today’s world so that an ever increasing number of people are brand conscious and purchase seemingly high quality, pricy luxuries. The major motive for such consumerism is the desire for better social acceptance and it might as well be discouraged.

One main reason is that consuming luxury products could help people to fit in,whether at school, work or in social circles. With the disposable income rising, buying these well-known brands from the perspective of consumers will contribute to greater social acceptance. This is especially the case in fashion. Some consumers often buy clothing brands either perceived as fashionable, trendy or high class, or easily accepted by a particular subculture or peer group.

Never will this unhealthy desire for famous brands be better for people themselves and the society as a whole. Some products in famous brands indeed have better quality and reputation. For example, Audi or BMW produce cars with elegant appearance and amusing spare parts, thus being more appealing to customers than those unknown brand cars. However, this is not that simple. There are still a number of individuals who buy these products not because they are extraodinary in quality but because they can help them be accepted by a certain group or show distinct personal image and even give them a chance to show off , even though these products may be of no use to consumers. In this case, people will just keep up with the Joneses, an unhealthy mentality that will not only take a heavy toll on their financial condition and personal life but result in some social problems,such as the waste of resources and other negative social consequences.

In conclusion, purchasing famous brand products like clothes, cars and other items maybe simply for being socially acceptable and my view is that this kind of consumption is detrimental to every single individual involved and the whole society.
