雅思写作范文:国际旅游的争议

Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately, international tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Arguments

1. It is necessary to develop the tourist trade, for it contributes a lot to increasing understanding between nations.

2. As the saying goes, "Seeing is believing." Only a trip to an unfamiliar land can help us understand the people and culture there.

3. Since tourism helps increase understanding between people, it will finally wipe out prejudice against other nations, and make the world a more peaceful one.

4. Tourism contributes significantly to many countries' GNP (Gross National Product). The economy of some nations is based on the tourist industry.

5. Tourism helps develop a nation's commerce because tourists are most likely to buy souvenirs wherever they go.

6. Tourism provides jobs for many people and helps solve or ease the social problem of unemployment.

7. Tourism helps accelerate a city's construction and its embellishment.

8. Contact with tourists from afar widens the horizon of the local people.

9. The tourist trade gives people a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the world and the wonders of mankind.

10. Tourism will help people learn about different cultures of the world.

Counter-arguments

1. Tourism cannot increase understanding between nations because tourists are often trapped in big hotels and only gaze at the natives from a distance.

2. Tourism does not wipe out prejudice, but leads to the persistence of national stereotypes because when travelling, you notice only characteristics which confirm your preconceptions.

3. It is true that foreign friends can make people understand stereotypes are absurd and harmful, but the tourist trade prevents people from making foreign friends.

4. Since tourists do not have time to mix with the local people, they cannot have a full view of the local culture.

5. Tourism makes some parts of the world too crowded a place to live in.

6. Tourism creates pollution and has destroyed many beautiful scenic spots.

7. Tourists cannot have a full enjoyment of the beautiful scenery because the places they visit are restricted by organizers.[More:www.cnielts.com]

8. As the saying goes, "Travel makes a wise man better, but a fool worse."

9. Contact with and assimilation of other cultures will reduce the uniqueness of one's own culture and make the world less colourful than before.

The booming tourist trade has brought about mass exchange of population between different nations. At first glance, this bridges the understanding and communication between different cultures. In my opinion, however, this fast-growing industry has produced tension between people from different cultural background.

The first barrier for curious tourists from all over the world is the problem of language. The most attractive destinations of tourism are, ironically, less developed areas where the world language --- English, has not been prevalent. Therefore, the direct contact between tourists and local residents has been cut down. The tour guide, normally interpreter too, becomes the only link of communication. But unfortunately, as indicated in any guide-training handbook, the responsibility of a tour guide is to arouse the tourists' interest and passion rather than present a lecture on cultural difference. Thus, tourists, beyond their expectations, cannot fully understand the cultures which appear to be exotic.

Another obstacle is from the local government. As I argue before, in most of case, the 'local' refers to the less developed regions. In order to attract foreign investment and maintain the local tourism industry, the officials, deliberately or not, only hope to show outsiders the positive side of the area, hence, the part of local living. As a result, conducted tours are carefully censored. The tourists, or 'prisoners' to some extent, are allowed to see only what the organizers want them to see and no more. A window-shop schedule gives no opportunity to wander off on one's own. In this way, even for a knowledgeable traveler with practical experience can only 'see' the superficial of the local culture. If so, an instant misunderstanding will be falsely shaped.

All things considered, the international tourism contributes absolutely nothing to increasing understanding. Instead, in its way as it is today, a hideous prejudice and misinterpretation will be established.

雅思写作范文:援助贫困国家

Some people said giving aid to poorer countries has more objective effects than positive effects, to what extent do you agree or disagree?

Afflicted with famine, wars, diseases, people living in those poverty-stricken countries are struggling for survival. From Vietnam to Burma, from Ethiopia to Cambodia, what they worry about is where is the next meal, how to save the long-suffering family’s life and what next day will be. In face of this severe situation, it is suggested that rich countries should shoulder responsibility to help them out of such harsh situation.

The opponents are of the opinion that this well-meant aid may engender unfavorable effects on the current situation. To begin with, those aids are likely to be misused by local officials. Surprising is that the poorer a country is, the higher possibility of its government’s corruption, which is, actually, the root cause for its backwardness. To make it worse, citizens, once granted food and daily necessities alike, are prone to produce strong independence and reliance. It is universally acknowledged that only those countries thriving for advance on their own can really make a difference. Once the counting-on habit, which serves as a barrier to further development, is formed, to eliminate it will be a tough job.

However, proponents also have strong reasons. Primarily, the supports, financially and technologically, have turned out to be of high importance to boosting economy of poor nations. For example, powerful economies, like France, Britain, America to name just a few, can invest in domestic industries, so that more job opportunities are brought and living standard enhanced. Furthermore, it is a win-win strategy to reach out an aiding hand. Without doubt, modern technology enables the world shrink into a Village, therefore, with a few villagers suffering, an overall prosperity is nothing but a Utopia. That is to say only when hunger is conquered, when wars are quenched globally can the real comprehensive prosperity be achieved. Most important of all, those super powers, historically, were major contributors to the current trauma of those have-nots.

Overall, rich countries are definitely duty-bound to help their poor counterparts out. For one thing, it mirrors the humanism; for another, it is an indispensable procedure in realization of global peace and flourish.

雅思写作范文:因电脑发展而消失的职位

As the world becomes technologically advanced, computers are replacing more and more jobs.

Describe some job positions that may be lost because of computers, and discuss at least one problem that may result.

Model Answer:

When computers first made their way into the business sector, everyone believed that they would make people's jobs easier. What was not expected was that computers would eliminate jobs. Besides contributing to unemployment, these automated workers often exhibit inadequate job performance.

A number of jobs have been lost as a direct result of new computer technology. Ticket agents in various transportation facilities, from subway/underground stations to airports are virtually nonexistent these days. Bank tellers have been greatly reduced due to automated bank machines. In addition, many call centers/centres that have help lines are almost entirely computerized/computerised. A few years ago I worked as a helper in our local library. Today this position does not exist, because six new computers have been installed. The number of positions lost to computers grows exponentially, and unemployment continues to get worse.

While a computer may easily achieve the main tasks of these jobs, most computers fall short when customers have a unique request or problem. A pre-paid ticket booth does not have insight about the entertainment district and cannot offer friendly directions to a tourist. Similarly, an automated bank machine cannot provide assistance and reassurance to a customer who has just had his credit card stolen. And, more often than not, automated telephone operators cannot answer the one question that we have, and we end up waiting on the line to speak with someone anyway. Every time I go into the library where I worked I notice elderly people who don't know how to use the computers and can't find anyone to help.

In the future, I believe a new business trend will evolve. As computers eliminate jobs, new positions will have to be invented. More and more people will go into business for themselves, and hopefully put the personal touch back into business. I believe that the human workforce will demonstrate that it is more valuable than computers.

雅思写作范文:机器翻译与人工翻译

Write about the following topic:

Machine translation (MT) is slower and less accurate than human translation and there is no immediate or predictable likelihood of machines taking over this role from humans.

Do you agree or disagree?

Model Answer:

It is true that there have been great advances in technology over the last forty years. For example / For instance the use of mobile phones and e-mail communication are common these days. However, machines that translate from one language to another are still in their early stages.

It seems to me that a machine could never do as good a job as a human, especially when it comes to interpreting what people are saying. Of course, machines can translate statements such as “Where is the bank?” but even simple statements are not always straightforward because the meaning depends on more than just words. For instance / For example the word “bank” has a number of different meanings in English. How does a translating machine know which meaning to take?

In order to understand what people are saying, you need to take into account the relationship between the speakers and their situation. A machine cannot tell the difference between the English expression “Look out!” meaning “Be careful!” and “Look out!” meaning “Put your head out of the window”. You need a human being to interpret the situation.

Similarly with written language, it is difficult for a machine to know how to translate accurately because we rarely translate every word. On the contrary, we try to take into consideration how the idea would be expressed in the other language. This is hard to do because every language has its own way of doing and saying things.

For these reasons I feel that it is most unlikely that machines will take the place of humans in the field of translating and interpreting. If machines ever learn to think, perhaps then they will be in a position to take on this role.

雅思考试写作范文:电视阻碍了亲友交流

Television has destroyed communication among friends and family.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Model Answer:

The invention of television is undoubtedly one of humankind's greatest inventions. It is a way of communication among people of one country and different countries and nations. People watch TV to find out about the latest news, weather, sports, etc. It is a great way to learn new and extend one's range of interests. Scientists say that children spend the same amount of hours in front of TV as they do in school. I think that this can be said about many grown people too. Also, television is a great means of eliminating stress and tension. One can relax and leave one's troubles behind lying on one's favorite sofa and watching a comedy. However, some people believe that television has destroyed communication among friends and family.

Personally, I do not agree with this statement. A couple centuries ago people spent their time gambling, reading, gossiping or playing chess. I do not think that television is a cause of destroyed communication among family members and friends. First of all, if members of a family have common interests and they want to make each other happy they will always find many ways to spend their time together and be close. Otherwise, if people avoid each other and they do not have anything to share with each other they will find television a great way to escape from this miserable existence. I believe that many people chose family and their friends over some soap operas or a movie.

Second of all, I think that television can be a great resource of subjects to discuss. Many people watch different educational programs to find out more about their environment, nature, wild life animals, economic situations, etc. So, when they gather with their friends they discuss important issues and argue with each other in looking for the truth.

My husband and I often watch the news channel to keep abreast of the latest news. After that we always discuss some issues we concerned about. Also, we like to watch a TV show "the funniest animals". We like this program because it makes us laugh. I can not imagine how these programs can prevent our communication and be harmful to our relations.

To summarize, I would like to add that if people want to communicate with each other they will find a way to do it. Otherwise, if television were not existent, people would find other escapes and reasons not to be with each other such as drugs, gambling, etc.
