其实很多中国学生口语非常流利,但有的句子说出来却令人不悦,比如有的话题让我们表达不满意的事或物,比如‘Describe a subject you dislike’或‘Describe a movie you dislike’,很多同学直接这样回答,‘We are unhappy with that movie.’或 ‘We are dissatisfied with that subject. ’,其实,我们完全可以换一种更加礼貌的方式,‘I'm sorry but we're not very happy with that movie.’或 ‘We're not completely satisfied.’。

比如would, should, could, might来表示自己的态度,看法、建议或忠告,比如:

(1) Without relaxation, our life might be sharply shortened.

(2) But if they watch TV too much, their eyes would be seriously hurt and they might be distracted from their study。

(3) Umm, it could be anything, like punctured tires, diversions of traffic, sudden descent of fog… …

2. 在句首可用maybe/perhaps, unfortunately, unluckily, I'm afraid, I’m not sure..., I doubt…

(1) Maybe I should eat more vegetables to keep a healthy diet.

(2) Perhaps there’s another side of the question.

(3) I am afraid children would be addicted to online games and put their study aside.

3.大量使用not very / quite, rather, somewhat, slightly, sort of、a little bit,或者使用否定句型代替直接性的否定词汇,比如not completely,not very等,来软化绝对和强硬的语气,给人一种正面的感觉。

(1) That’s not quite reasonable, I guess.

(2) Dogs, it seems, love to chew up cash money.

(3) Rainy days often cause too much inconvenience to people’s daily lives, isn’t it?

The Beauty ---- Mandarin ducks

I happened to meet the Mandarin Ducks over the years in the wild area of Ampere Garden, in ponds along the big drainage. And, I'm 100% sure they were not normal Ducks. It was 'in the wild' and free to fly off whenever it wanted to!

The male mandarin duck is way more colorful, his breast is purple with two vertical white bars and the flanks ruddy, with two orange "sails" at the back. The female is similar to female Wood Duck, all dark green brown. Male Mandarin ducks are considered by many to be the most beautifully colored of all waterfowl.

In China, the mandarin duck is associated as a Chinese weddings symbol, because it symbolizes wedded bliss and fidelity. A Chinese proverb for loving couples uses the Mandarin Duck as a metaphor: "Two mandarin ducks playing in water". Mandarin ducks are always depicted in a pair – it is said that if the ducks were separated, they would pine for each other and die of loneliness. Dying of loneliness for love might only be a romantic myth and a cheerful reflection of people's attitude to reality.

Anyway, I love these lovely creatures; I wish I could raise one.

Describe a subject that you studied that you thought was interesting.

You should say:

what the subject was

what your teacher was like

how long you studied this subject

and explain why you thought it was interesting.

Ok then, well the subject I’d like to talk about is Economics, because it was one of the few classes that I actually enjoyed, and this was in no small part due to the fact that we had a really great teacher for it.

And as for what makes me say that, well first of all, he had a knack of being able to make all of his classes really interesting, and he did this by always asking us questions and getting us to think deeply about all kinds of things related to Economics. So for example, he would often start class by telling us a story that was in some way connected to what we would be going through that day, after which he would then ask us how we thought the story ended, and this really kind of helped arouse our curiosity in the subject.

So that’s one thing, and another thing I liked about him was the fact that he seemed to take a genuine interest in all of us, and I could see this in the way he spoke and listened, because you know, it’s pretty easy to tell whether or not a teacher really cares about teaching, and with him I could tell straight away that he enjoyed teaching us and had our best interests at heart.

But anyway, as for how long I studied Economics for, well basically, it was for two years during high school, so it wasn’t really for all that long, which was a bit of a pity, because as I mentioned earlier, I really enjoyed the classes. And one more thing to mention about them, which I don’t think I’ve said yet, is that we hardly ever went through the text book, which was such a refreshing change from all the other classes I had. So instead, our teacher, who was called Mr. Guise, by the way, would give us things like newspaper clippings or magazine articles to read and discuss, and by doing this, we came to realize just how significant a role Economics played in our lives. So as you can imagine, this made the classes so much more fun than they otherwise would have been if we’d just ploughed through the text book, and I’m very grateful to Mr. Guise for this.

(Describe a toy that you received when you were a child)

When I was a child, I received a Barbie doll as a gift from my father's friend. He bought the toy from the States.

I played with this Barbie doll almost every day. I begged my grandma to make clothes for her and dressed her like a princess or a super star. She was my favorite toy for a long time. I always put her besides my pillow.

I felt super happy when I received this Barbie doll. The doll had long hair, big eyes, and beautiful skirt. When I was a child, Barbie doll was very expensive and my parents couldn't afford to buy it, so Barbie doll had been a dream gift for me. To some extent, receiving the doll was a dream coming true. I saw it as a valuable gift and tried to keep it in a good shape. I also felt thankful for my father's friend who brought this happiness to me.
