You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.

Passage One

Most American people hate repeating the same work endlessly, especially those who live in West America. They try their best to make their life colorful and their work interesting. If they have

to do the same regular work, they’ll try to do it in different ways. Repetition and monotony ( 单 调 )

are what they cant stand.

In the West of America, there is a beautiful old mountain village which is well known for its straw hats. The villagers there can make different styles of hats—hats for old gentlemen, for sweet and playful children, and for beautiful young ladies. People often go there to buy hats.

One day there came a young tourist who entered a hat shop and found a very nice hat that cost five dollars. He said to the shop-keeper,” If you agree to sell at a cheaper price, Id like to buy two hundred hats of this style.” “No, you should pay me at least ten dollars each if you wish to get so many hats of the same style.”

“Hows that?” The tourist could not understand.

“Well,” said the shop-keeper, “if you buy only one hat of this style, I can make it easily. If you order two hundred hats of different styles, I can also manage the business without much difficulty. However, it will almost bore me to death if you want me to make two hundred hats of the same style. So at least you pay me double price.”

It is exciting to apply for a job that really appeals to you. In making your application, there are a number of points for you to observe.

In your letter of application, say just enough to give a good account of yourself without being wordy. If you are answering an advertisement, any information for which it asks must, of course, be given. This will usually cover your academic record and any further education and training. You may also be asked to give the names of one or two persons to supply references. For this purpose

you should choose people who know you well enough to vouch(保证) for your character and ability;

and to be polite, you should seek in advance their permission to be named as referees.

It will depend on circumstances how much you can carefully add about yourself. Your purpose is to bring to the notice of the employer any good reason why you rather than any of the other applicants should be chosen for the job. Therefore, if you feel you have any special skill or talent for the work, or particular interest in the line of business. let it be known.

Finally, there is your use of language. You cannot go wrong if you keep your sentences and paragraphs short, making sure the sense is clear and well-expressed. Choose plain words so long as they convey the meaning.

Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noises can cause hearing damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines in factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home or at work. A person only needs to hear the noise for a little more than one second to be affected. An American scientist has found that using aspirin can increase the temporary hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment, using a number of male students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, and then he tested their hearing ability. He found that the students who were given four grams of aspirin a day for two days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about two times as great. The scientist said millions of people in the United States use much larger amounts of aspirin than were used in the study. Passage Four

Ancient people had little idea of the nature of the earths surface. But if they lived on the seashore, they knew that there was land and sea.

People who lived near the sea noticed that there were two kinds of land. There were, first, little pieces of land surrounded by sea. One Latin word for “sea” is “salum”, which means “salt”. This is

because sea water, unlike rain-water, contains salt—it is salty. So a piece of land in the sea was “in

salt” in Latin, and this became isle in English.

Then there was another kind of land that went on and on. It was “continuous land, and so became known as continent in English from the Latin “continēnts” meaning continuous. In English, we also speak of a continent as the mainland (“main” comes from the Latin “magnus” meaning “ great”), as opposed to island( isle-land).

To the ancient Greek, there seemed to be three continents separated by sea. The Mediterranean Sea, in fact, gets its name from the Latin “medius” (middle) and “terra” (land). It was a sea that lay

in the middle, with three bodies of land around it. The three continents—Asia, Europe and Africa—

are actually connected by land. Africa and Asia are connected by only the small Sinai Isthmus, from the Greek “isthmus” meaning “a narrow passage”, but Europe and Asia are connected by land for a thousand miles or more and it is customary to speak of Europe as a continent. Many geographers speak of the landmass of Asia plus Europe as Eurasia, and Eurasia plus Africa is sometimes called the World Island. The three together are surrounded by sea, so they form a large island, and they contain about 85 percent of the earths population.

Part III. Translation (20 points)

Directions: In this part, there is one passage in English. Read the passage carefully and translate it into Chinese.

Learning English has been almost a painful experience for me, one that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Not only did learning English teach me the value of hard work, but also gave me

insights( 领 悟 ) into another culture. The most exciting result of having learned English is that I am

able to communicate with many more people than before. Talking with people is my favorite activity, so the newly learned language allows me to meet new people, participate in conversations, and form new and unforgettable friendships.

College Students Doing Part-Time Jobs

There are many advantages for college students to have part-time jobs. First, it can help the students to realize that if they want to be successful, they need to be hard-working. Next, doing part-time jobs can help the students to learn about time management. Then, doing part-time jobs can provide the students opportunities to put what they have learned in class into practice, which, in turn, will help them learn about what exactly is needed in real jobs.

However, there may also be some disadvantages. Firstly, the students study hours may be shortened depending on circumstances. They may not have enough time to do their homework or study for their examinations. Secondly, some students may become too preoccupied with making money. They may not be willing to commit as much time as needed to their study. The consequences may include failure in examinations or non-graduation in the end.

As far as I am concerned, college students can take part-time jobs as long as they can keep a good balance between their study and their part-time jobs.

Linkup ,the APP Research and Development Company, has announced it will give more than twenty-five million dollars in money and investments to help the poor. The company says the effort involves using the power of information and technology to help people improve their lives.

James Lee works for Linkup.org—— the part of the company that gives money to good causes. He said the company’s first project will help identify where infectious (传染性的) diseases are developing. In Southeast Asia and Africa, for example, Google.org will work with partners to strengthen early-warning systems and take action against growing health threats.

Linkup.org’s second project will invest in ways to help small and medium-sized businesses grow. James Lee says microfinance (小额信贷) is generally small, short-term loans that create few jobs. Instead, he says Google.org wants to develop ways to bring investors and business owners together to create jobs and improve economic growth.

Linkup.org will also give money to help two climate-change programs announced earlier this year. One of these programs studies ways to make renewable (再生的) energy less costly than coal-based energy. The other is examining the efforts being made to increase the use of electric cars.

Task 2

If you think 3D printing is only good for making delicate paperweights(压纸器), then you’re pretty much right. However, a group of Dutch architects have already begun 3D printing an entire canal house in Amsterdam. Is the first 3D printed house a gimmick(喙头)?Definitely! Is it an experiment that pushes the possibilities for 3D printing technology and architecture? Maybe!

3D Print Canal House is the brainchild of DUS Architects. “KamerMaker,” Dutch for “room maker”, is their giant printer built inside a shipping container. Just a few weeks ago, KamerMaker began printing plastic furniture and walls at an empty canal-side lot in northern Amsterdam. Smaller versions of the unusual honeycomb walls have been tested on normal desktop printers, and everyone just needed to scale it up (按比例放大). Well, if only it were that easy.

“The printer did not always manage to spread the plastic evenly(均匀的), making some of the ribs of the honeycomb structure of the block uneven,”reported ARN(Australian Radio Network) to the surprise of no one who has used a 3D printer. But the architects remain optimistic. The first few printed blocks are means to be test prices as they improve the process.

It takes about a week to print a 3-meter high block right now. The project’s leaders hope to eventually get that down to two hours and finish the first of 12 rooms in a year, and the entire house in less than 3 years.

Finally, 3D Print Canal House is an architecture research project, one that is very much being conducted in the public eye. You can actually buy tickets to visit the construction site for 2.50 Euros.

The top floors will become more decorated, for example, as newer techniques are used. They’ll explore the possibilities of 3D printing, like honeycomb walls or an entire room recycled, redesigned, and built again. Nobody’s going to move into 3D printed house soon, but, if anyone ever dose, something might be learned from this experiment by the email.

26. What have the Dutch architects begun to use 3D printer to do according to the passage?___

A. To make heavy paperweights.

B. To print the unusual honeycomb.

C. To print an entire canal house.

D. To build a shipping container

27. Where did KamerMaker begin printing plastic furniture and walls several weeks ago?

A. It was inside a shipping container in Amsterdam.

B. It was at an empty canal-side lot in northern Amsterdam.

C. It was in a canal house in Amsterdam.

D. It was in a room.

28. What is the weakness of the 3D printer mentioned in the passage?

A. It cannot always spread the plastic evenly.

B. It needs to be shortened.

C. It cannot make the ribs of the honeycomb structure.

D. It can print anything smoothly.

29. How long will it take for the 3D printer to make the canal house in Amsterdam?

A. A week

B. Two hours

C. More than 3 years

D. Less than 3 years

30. Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the passage?

A. This canal house is being built in the public eye.

B. The top floors of the canal house will be more decorated.

Let’s say you have a certain amount of money you’ve saved up for holiday gifts. If you want to get something for everyone on your list, you can’t spend much on any single purchase.

But have you ever heard the expression "time is money "? There’s some truth to it! We “spend” time just like we “spend” money, and in both cases, we have to spend it wisely if we want to get something good in return. Just like you might get an allowance of 10 dollars a week. Or 38 dollars for a trip to the mall, each day we are given 24 hours of time.

The earliest way to help you get everything done to budget that time! This is all about:

-Examining your Have-to’s and Want-to’s.

-Examining your how much time your Have-to’s and Want-to’s will take up.

-Working out a plan that let’s you speed the amount of time on each one.

Once you have this plan, a “time budget”, you’ll be better able to create a Daily Schedule and Weekly Planner. Of course, everyday isn’t exactly the same as the next, so it may help you to make a different time budget for different days.

Let’s look at a sample time budget on Wednesday:

Sleep 8 hours

Shower, dressing, ready for school 1/2 hour

Breakfast 1/2 hour

Bus for school 1/2 hour

School 7 hours

Bus home 1/2 hour

Soccer practice 2 hours

Household chores 1/2 hour

Homework 2 hours

Dinner 1/2 hour

TV time 1 hour

Reading/personal time 1 hour

Total time spent 24 hours

Great! That day’s budget works out, because it all adds up 24 hours. If the total came out to be more than that, we would have choose something to cut down or drop from that day. When you make these types of decision, you choose priorities.

Task 4

[A]Interest in pursuing international careers has risen in recent years strengthened by permanent personnel shortages that are causing companies to search beyond their home borders for talent.

[B] Professionals seek career experience outside of their home countries for a variety of reasons. They may feel the need to recharge their batteries with a new challenge. They may want a position with more responsibility that encourages creativity. Or they may wish to expose their children to another culture, and the opportunity to learn a second language.

[C]When applying for a job, one usually has to submit a resume or curriculum vitae (CV). The two terms generally mean the same thing: a one--or two--page document describing ones educational qualifications and professional experience. However, guidelines for preparing a resume are constantly changing. The best advice is to find out what is appropriate regarding the company culture, the country culture, and the culture of the person making the hiring decision. The challenge will be to include two or more cultures in one document. The following list is a good place to start.

[D]“Educational requirements differ from country to country. In almost every case of cross--border job hunting, just stating the title of your degree will not be an adequate description. Provide the reader with details about your studies and any related experience. "

[E]Pay attention to the resume format you use-chronological or reverse-chronological order. Chronological order means listing your oldest work experience first. Reverse-chronological order means listing your current or most recent experience first. Most countries have preferences about which format is most acceptable. If you find no specific guidelines, the general preference is for the reverse-chronological format."

[F]If you are submitting your resume in English, find out if the receiver uses British English or American English because there are changes between the two versions. For example, university education is often referred to as tertiary education in the United Kingdom, but this term is almost never used in the United States. A reader who is unfamiliar with these changes may assume that your resume contains errors.

31. The author believes that an individual who applies to work overseas seeks either his own or his childrens development.

32. When it comes to resume writing, it is best to take cultural factors intocon sideration.

33. According to the authors last piece of advice, the applicants should be aware of the differences between the changes of English.

34. Companies are hiring more foreign employees because they have difficulty

finding qualified personnel at home.

35. When writing about qualifications, applicants are advised to provide a detaileddescription of their study and work experiences.

Passage One

Questions I to 5 are based on the following passage:

A U.N. report says water is in demand around the world as temperatures on Earth’s surface rise and demand grows along with populations. The report was released this week at the World Water Forum in Brasilia. The conference has been described as the world’s largest water-related event.

Federal District Governor Rodrigo Rollemberg spoke at a panel discussion on Tuesday at the forum. He described water shortages as a worldwide problem. “Here in Brasilia, it is no different,” he added.

The public water supply has less water because of low rainfall as well as fast and disorderly growth in Brasilia, which is part of the Federal District, Rollemberg said. In January 2016, after three years of little rain, district officials began limiting how much water people could use. The governments of the Federal District and the nearby state of Goias also gave $166 million to develop water infrastructure(基础设施).

Demand around the world is expected to increase by nearly one-third by 2050. By then, 5 billion people could be left with poor access to water, the U.N. warned in its 2018 World Water Development Report. To avoid such a crisis, U.N. officials called for “nature-based solutions” that use or copy natural processes that should be used to increase water availability. They said solutions could include changing farming methods so fields keep more moisture and nutrients, collecting rainwater, and protecting wetlands. The officials also proposed reestablishing floodplains and said that plants could be grown on housetops. Such proposals will become more important as water industries grow.

Passage Two

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

The Queen has only given one interview while a sovereign(君主). Her true personality remains elusive to the public. However, one thing is clear: Queen Elizabeth is an introvert.Introverts prefer quiet environments and feel energized from spending time alone or with people they know well. They aren’t necessarily shy, but they do tend to be more reserved and guarded with strangers. Fellow introverts will appreciate how draining an average day for Her Majesty must be.

Fortunately, the Queen has some tricks to make public engagements easier. Just like us commoners rely on friends to save us from awkward situations or boring conversations, she subtly signals to her staff when she wants an intervention(介入). If she places her handbag on the table, it indicates that she wants the event to end in the next five minutes. For more urgent situations, putting her bag on the floor shows that she wants her lady-in-waiting to rescue her immediately.

Most comfortable in the countryside, the Queen has a well-known passion for horses and dogs. There is a scene in the hit Netflix show The Crown which reveals a fascinating side of the monarch. While giving Jackie Kennedy a personal tour of Buckingham Palace, the two women find themselves bonding over their respective positions as introverted women who have found themselves in the limelight. Surrounded by the Queen’s beloved corgis, both women admit they are happiest around animals and that their extroverted sisters would have been much better suited to their public roles.

Passage four

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage

You’ve made it. You managed to navigate your way through the world’s largest airport you breezed through security and you successfully boarded the plane. Now you’re comfortable in your seat in the cabin, and there’s even a little bit it of elbow room, as the flight isn’t fully booked for once. With the hassle behind you, you settle in with your neck pillow, pop some Kenny G on your iPod, and get ready to spend quality time sleeping on a plane. And you’re abouto make a huge mistake that will put your health at risk, as reported by Travel + Leisure.

It’s not because of the Kenny G. It’s the shuteye part. According to Medline Plus, falling asleep during landing or takeoff could cause serious damage to your ears. It all has to do with the rapid changes in air pressure in the cabin. If you’re awake, a natural response to alleviate pressure on your eardrums during takeoff and landing is to “pop” them, to maintain a pressure equilibrium. If you’re sleeping on a plane, you can’t actively work to relax those muscles and release the tension, so you can become susceptible to dizziness, ear infections, eardrum damage, hearing loss and nose bleeds. “A quick change in altitude affects the air pressure in the ear,” says Angel Chalmers, a British pharmacist, via Express. “This leads to a vacuum in the Eustachian tubes(咽鼓管) which makes the ears feel blocked and sound dull.”

Keep those Eustachian tubes clear and keep those eyes open for at least another few minutes. Crack open that book you just bought in the terminal. After all, there are some major perks to buying your reading material at the airport.

A. to board the plane

B. to get a bit of elbow room

C. to get ready to sleep after boarding

D. to make yourself comfortable after boarding

B. Shutting your eyes

D. Falling asleep.

18. The underlined word"alleviate"( Paragraph 2) is the closest in meaning to “____”.

A.increase

B. reduce

C.maintain

D,escape

19. Having a vacuum in the Eustachian tubes during takeoff and landing could cause unpleasant symptoms to the following body parts EXCEPT____.

Researchers in Japan and Australia say they have made progress in developing blood test that could one day help doctors identify who might get Alzheimer’s disease. The scientists said the test can recognize a protein known as amyloid (涛粉样蛋) beta, which other studies have linked to Alzheimers. They said it was correct more than 90 percent of the time in a study involving over 370 people. The findings were published in the journal Nature.

Alzheimers disease is the most common form of demenna(痴呆). Experts believe dementia affects close to 50 million people worldwide. By the year 2050, it is expected to affect more than131 million people. Those numbers come from Alzheimers Disease International, a non-profit group. Currently, doctors have two ways to identify a buildup of amyloid beta in the brain. One is brain scan or brain imaging; the other is a spinal tap(脊椎抽 液). But both tests are invasive, costly and may only show results when the disease has already started to progress. There is no treatment that can slow the progression of Alzheimers. Current drugs can only case some of the effects of the disease.

Having a simple, low-cost blood test could make it easier for drug companies to find enough people who are at risk of developing Alzheimers to test new medicines, said Katsuhiko Yanagisawa. He was one of the leaders of the study. He works at the Japanese National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology

Alzheimers disease is thought to start developing years before patients have any signs of memory loss. Experts say an important factor in finding an effective treatment will be the ability to recognize signs of the disease early. "You have got to walk before you run, "said Colin Masters, a co-leader of the study and a professor at the University of Melbourne in Australia. " You have to learn to diagnose the disease directly before you can hope to see the effect of therapeutic intervention. And that’ s where the real value in this test will come. " Masters added.

56.This passage reports the development of a test to diagnose Alzheimers disease

57. One advantage of the present test is that it costs than the previous tests.

58. All the three tests identify Alzheimer’s disease by detecting a protein named .

59. Can doctors cure or slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease today?

In my view, the late Cambridge professor is wrong because there are strong grounds for believing that computers will never copy all human cognitive abilities. 67. AI has historically failed to copy human mentality, and it will continue to fail. Three fundamental problems explain why.

First, computers lack true understanding. A US philosopher John Searle proposes how a computer program can appear to understand Chinese stories by responding to questions, but fail to truly understand anything of the interaction.

Second, computers lack consciousness. Some researchers hold 68. if a robot experiences a conscious sensation as it interacts with the world, consciousness will exist in everything everywhere:in the cup of tea I am drinking, in the seat that I am sitting on. But does everything in this world have souls or minds? If we reject this idea, we must reject machine consciousness

Lastly, computers lack mathematical insight. Can the human mind be completely realized by mere computations my role as an Al expert on the International Committee for Robot Arms Control.I am particularly concerned by the potential development of robotic weapons systems. 69. These systems can engage themselves in military action without human instruction. This is because current AI is not similar to human intelligence. When fighting against each other, poorly designed autonomous systems have the potential to make the situations worse rapidly. Such systems can exhibit true artificial stupidity.

It is possible to agree that 70. AI may pose an existential threat to humanity, but it will never become more intelligent than us.

Passage One

A lot of kids are getting online these days —sharing data, talking about social issues, meeting adults as well as kids, and learning about other cultures. There seems to be everything on the network. Just like any other form of media, the quality of this massive collection of information is unequal, and there is good information as well as rubbish.Networks hold great promise: however, it’s also home to people who mean to hurt others or use their technical knowledge to steal from them . Although many Web pages can teach kids useful things, there are some other sites waiting to temp young people who are immature and easily affected.

By now, you may shake your head, but wait, let’s try to put the problem into perspective

’s safe for kids to use the Internet. The number of sites considered harmful is between 1% and 3%, which shows about million other sites are interesting and educational. Besides, to stop children from using these services just because crimes are being committed online would be like telling them not to attend college because students may have accidents on campus.

What can parents do to protect their children from those harmful sites? The simplest solution is the use of programs which block offensive sites. Such programs are set to screen out certain words likely to appear on “unhealthy” sites. But many sites inappropriate to young people are clever at using words with double meanings that may appear harmless. Whats more, not only do the programs fail to do the job satisfactorily, they also take away the decisive role of parents in children’s education. A child who downloads bad information or pictures can only be corrected by positive family influence. No filtering program is necessary for a child who has learned to say “no” to sites he knows are inappropriate for him.

Today, when children are exposed to technology at a young age, parents often find themselves lagging behind in computer skills. Surprisingly, this may be the key to your involvement. What is better way to learn about the Internet than to do so alongside your children? They’ll most likely pick it up more quickly than you do, of course, but you’ll have the chance to see, and take pride in, your child at work. You may search for information that interests your child together with him and get to know the “friends” he has online, just as you would get to know his other friends.

Thoughtful parents would combine supervision with communication, which is the best wav to take advantage of the Internet as a resource while protecting their children. Follow their examples and have fun with kids on the Net!

51. According to the passage, is it wise for parents to keep their children away from the computer? Why?

A) No. Because there are also millions of sites which are interesting and educational.

B) No. Because their children have the right to use computer,

C) Yes. Because there are many rubbish sites which may hurt children.

D)Yes. Because children may become addicted to computer games.

52. In the last two paragraphs, parents are advised to

A) learn about the Internet along with their children

B) watch their children while they are at work

C) search for information for their children

D) make friends with their children

53. According to the article, the best way to protect children as well as take advantage of the Internet is .

A) the use of filtering programs

B) parents,mastery of computer skills

C) the combination of supervision and communication

D) forbidding them to make friends on the Internet

54. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined expression “lagging behind”?

A)hide behind B) run behind

C)walk behind D) fall behind

Passage Two

When you go to university to study for a degree, you have decided to study professionally, rather than as an amateur; so being a student is now your profession for at least the next four years.

This involves a change of attitude in many ways. Although the process has been going on since you went to middle school, the biggest change is going to take place. Now, instead of taking several subjects, you have chosen one major subject because you find it interesting and worth exploring further. The choice was yours. You also have the goal of getting a degree . The degree and the stages you have to pass through to achieve it give you motivation, even though it may become weak from time to time, and not all parts of the course will be exciting; a sure way to lose interest is to do too little work. It is a law of diminishing returns - the less work you do, the less interest you will have and the more bored you will become. So, regular work is needed to keep up your interest as well as to keep pace with new work.

Another change is in the relationship with teachers. This may well have changed during middle school and high school, but now the whole context is different. You are no longer forced lo slay in school all day, and apart from your class time, you organize your own time and place for studying. You are there to study (an active process) rather than to be taught (passive). Your teachers may or may not urge you, but they do want you to share their interest in the subject and they want you to succeed.

Some activities, like discussing and reading, are basic to studying. Make sure that you are doing these efficiently.

Group discussions give you a chance to train yourself to speak and discuss more effectively. Theywill fail in their purpose if you keep silent —and if you start off this way, the harder it will become to get out of the situation of being the non-speaking member of the group. In the future you are almost certainly going to have to be good at speaking, so get into the way of talking about your subject now. This is actually more fun than sitting being silently miserable because you are not saving anything. Nobody will think what you say is foolish. Everyone will be thankful not to face awkward silence.

55. When does a person start to study professionally?

A)The time when he starts a profession.

B)The time when he goes to university.

C)The time when he knows how to study.

D)The time when he goes to high school.

56. Which of the following is not unique to university?

A)Students have to choose one major subject.

B)The goal of study is to get a degree.

C)Students need to work hard.

D)Students organize their own time for studying.

57. University teachers.

A)don’t care about students’ performance

B)hope students can share their interest in

C)force students to stay in school all day

D)know nothing about their students

does the underlined word “they” refer to?

A)University teachers.

B)Group discussions.

C)University students.

D)The topics of discussions.

Passage Three

When I first met Nina, I disliked her at once. She was wearing skintight pedal pushers, a flashy, floppy top, and sneakers with no socks - bizarrely inappropriate even at our very informal company. Soon, Nina was doggedly pumping me for information about the new department I was running, where she hoped to get a permanent job. Not a chance, I thought. Not if I have anything to say about it

However, I didn’t Within a few days she was ‘trying out’,for me. I gave her a moderately difficult, uninteresting, and unimportant project that I didn’t need for months. It took that long for her successor to put in order the mess she had made out of ft Although I couldn’t have prediction exactly what Nina would do,in three minutes I had assessed her as someone who could not be relied on to get a job done.

We all make quick judgments about strangers. Within seconds after we meet someone, We take in a host of details and draw rather large conclusions from them. We may decide in a minute whether it is someone’s nature to be warm or cold, friendly or hostile, anxious or calm, happy or troubled. Unconsciously, we often ask and quickly answer certain questions: Will I enjoy talking to him at this party? Will she make an interesting friend? Will he/she make a good boss / sales manager / secretary for me? If we get to know the person better, we may change our minds. But we may not have the chance.

From Nina’s inappropriate dress and aggressive behavior toward me, I’d decided she was pushy. stupid and had poor judgment.I also had a lot of vague impressions I couldn’t explain. It was as if a warning bell went off in my head. Its message: this person was not to be trusted; her behavior would be unpredictable; she was motivated by a peculiar agenda of her own that I would never understand.

I was using a combination of observation, inference and intuition.

did the author dislike Nina?

A)Because of her badly looking sneakers.

B)Because of her inappropriate dress and aggressive behavior.

C)Because of her special uniform.

D)Because of her dirty words to the author.

did the author give Nina an“unimportant project” that he “didn’t need for months”?

A)Because the author wanted to play trick on her.

B)Because he had no other job for her to do at the moment.

C)Because the author believed she was the right person for the job.

D)Because the author thought she couldn’t be relied on to get a job done.

to the passage, which of the following is not true?

A)People tend to make quick judgment about strangers.

B)The author’s first judgment about Nina was totally wrong.

C)Nina behaved rather pushy when she first met the author.

D)The author actually disliked Nina at the first sight.

author’s judgment about Nina was based on .

A)a combination of observation, inference and intuition

B)a combination of imagination and observation

C)a combination of observation, intuition and imagination

D)a combination of inference, analysis and imagination

Passage1

Many post-80s couples are complaining that going to the movies, shopping or attending parties have become impossible since their kids were born. That s the way most parents are living their lives, no weekends of their own, no time to visit friends, not even a chance of promotion in their jobs.

Asking help from their parents might be a way out,but problems are that some aging parents are not strong enough to take care of the kids, and that the kids may also become too spoiled by their grandparents.

Then, here comes a solution: families with kids can form a small group, and parents of each family can take turns to look after all the kids in this group on weekends. Thus, other parents can have some quiet time and feel free to do something they ve been planning for a long time. At the same time, the kids can make new friends and won t be hanging around their parents all day long. This is baby-pooling.

Passage2

It is a terrible illustration of man s weakness to nature ,and the tsunami(海啸) that struck the Japanese coast in March, 2011 has illustrated the difficulty of fighting against natural disasters, even for a prosperous nation.

Totally preventing tsunami-damage is impossible. But there is much that can be done to minimize damage and loss of life. Measures that can be taken include designing solid buildings, and developing early-warming systems, public education programs and evacuation(疏散) strategies. Moreover, the approach of a tsunami is possibly picked up by the sensors of complicated international warming systems. Countries can use radio and television broadcasts as well as loudspeaker networks to warn the public.

But an early warming system depends on how far the tsunami strikes, if it s close by, the warning system is not going to be very effective. When people are faced with an unstoppable force like a tsunami the massive waves

created by events like underwater earthquakes, the best course of action for them is to get inland and to the higher ground as quickly as possible.

66. The first paragraph tells us that .

A. man can easily defeat the nature

B. tsunamis take place only in Japan

C. man s ability to cope with natural disasters is limited

D. the tsunami-damage in Japan is not so terrible

67. To prevent tsunami-damage, the following measures can be taken EXCEPT

C. stay where they are

D. rely on the warning systems

70. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. The total prevention of tsunamis is possible.

B. Rich countries are less affected by tsunamis than poor countries.

C. Approaching tsunamis can possibly be picked up by sensors.

D. An early warning system is effective when a tsunami is close by.

Passage 3

Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Annan, the former United Nations secretary general.

The report, to be released Friday, analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition (营养不良) and heat-related health problems.

But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.

Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.

Roger Pielke Jr.a political scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable (易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention.” But the report, he said, “will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed (有瑕疵的).”

However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty.

In a press release describing the report, Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing

the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report.

71.What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum?

A.Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development.

B.Rates of death from illnesses have risen due to global warming.

C.Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries.

D.Economic trends have to do with population and natural disasters.

72. What do we learn about the Forum’s report from the passage?

A.It was challenged by some climate and risk experts.

B.It aroused a lot of interest in the scientific circles.

C.It was warmly received by environmentalists.

D.It caused a big stir in developing countries.

73. What does Dr. Pielke say about the Forum’s report?

A.Its statistics look embarrassing.

B.It is invalid in terms of methodology.

C.It deserves our closest attention.

D.Its conclusion is purposely exaggerated.

74. What is Soren Andreasen’s view of the report?

A.Its conclusions are based on carefully collected data.

B.It is vulnerable to criticism if the statistics are closely examined.

C.It will give rise to heated discussions at the Copenhagen conference.

D.Its rough estimates are meant to draw the attention of world leaders.

75.What does Kofi Annan say should be the focus of the Copenhagen conference?

A.How rich and poor regions can share responsibility in curbing global warming.

B.How human and economic losses from climate change can be reduced.

C.How emissions of heat-trapping gases can be reduced on a global scale.

D.How rich countries can better help poor regions reduce climate hazards.

Passage 4

Reaching new peaks of popularity in North America is Iceberg Water, which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Arthur von Wiesenberger, who carries the title Water Master, is one of the few water critics in North America. As a boy, he spent time in the larger cities of Italy, France and Switzerland, where bottled water is consumed daily. Even then, he kept a water journal, noting the brands he liked best. “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,” He says.

But is plain tap water all that bad? Not at all. In fact, New York’s municipal water for more than a century was called the champagne of tap water and until recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity. Similarly, a magazine in England found that tap water from the Thames River tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water that were 400 times more expensive.

Nevertheless, soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share―this despite the fact that over 25 percent of bottled water comes from tap water: PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s Dasani are both purified tap water rather than spring water.

As diners thirst for leading brands, bottlers and restaurateurs salivate (垂涎) over the profits. A restaurant’s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it’s often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands aren’t available in stores, most diners don’t notice or care.

As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water. According to an article in The Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractive bottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the diners if they want it.

Regardless of how it’s sold, the popularity of bottled water taps into our desire for better health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity.

76. What do we know about Iceberg Water from the passage?

A.It is a kind of iced water.

B. It is just plain tap water.

C .It is a kind of bottled water.

D .It is a kind of mineral water.

77. By saying “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water (Line 4 Para2), Von Wiesenberger wants to convey the message that ________.

A .plain tap water is certainly unfit for drinking

B .bottled water is clearly superior to tap water

C. bottled water often appeals more to dogs taste

D. dogs can usually detect a fine difference in taste

78. The-fancier brands (Line 3 Para 5) refers to ________.

A. tap water from the Thames River

B. famous wines not sold in ordinary stores

C.PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola’s Dasani

D. expensive bottled water with impressive names

79. Why are some restaurants turning up the pressure to sell bottled water?

A. Bottled water brings in huge profits.

B. Competition from the wine industry is intense.

C. Most diners find bottled water affordable.

D. Bottled water satisfied diners’ desire to fashionable.

80. According to passage, why is bottled water so popular?

A. It is much cheaper than wine.

B. It is considered healthier.

C.It appeals to more cultivated people.

D. It is more widely promoted in the market.

第二段马上指出了瓶装水流行的原因,但这是借一位瓶装水专家之口来指出媒体普遍的观点:my dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,含义是瓶装水明显优于自来水。

第五、六段论证了售卖方式是瓶装水流行原因之一的观点,最后一段指出除售卖方式之外的其他原因(our desire for better health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity)。

76. What do we know about Iceberg Water from the passage?

A) It is a kind of iced water.

B) It is just plain tap water.

C) It is a kind of bottled water.

D) It is a kind of mineral water.(C)

77. By saying “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water” (Line 4 Para. 2), von Wiesenberger wants to convey the message that ________.

A) plain tap water is certainly unfit for drinking

B) bottled water is clearly superior to tap water

C) bottled water often appeals more to dogs taste

D) dogs can usually detect a fine difference in taste

78. The “fancier brands” (Line 3 Para. 5) refers to ________.

A) tap water from the Thames RierB) famnus gins not sold in ordinary stres

C) PepsC聯’s Aquafana andCocamCml聡’S Dasani

D) expenive bottled wate2 職thimpressive nams

A restaurant’s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it’s often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands aren’t available in stores, most diners don’t notice or care一句中,意思是:饭店一般把酒价标高100%到150%,而瓶装水常常会达到300%到500%。

79. Why are some restaurants turning up the pressure to sell bottled water?

A) Bottled water brings in huge profits.

B) Competition from the wine industry is intense.

C) Most diners find bottled water affordable.

D) Bottled water satisfied diners’ desire to fashionable

首先了解turn up the pressure的意思,turn up有“提高”的意思,如turn up the radio,提高收音机的音量。turn up the pressure就是加大压力、加大力度的`意思。

As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water一句,as a result是“所以、因此”的意思,说明前文已经说明了加大力度的原因,答案需要到前一段去找。

文中提到酒业(typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent)只是为了突出瓶装水的利润丰厚,没有提到二者存在竞争问题。

80. According to passage, why is bottled water so popular?

A) It is much cheaper than wine.

B) It is considered healthier.

C) It appeals to more cultivated people.

D) It is more widely promoted in the market.

The Attitude toward Crisis

In our life, there is not always plain road and we may confront various crises such as disease, accident, lost the way and so on. Toward these crises, different people have different attitudes.

Some people choose to face it directly and bravely. They believe that the difficulties and cries, taking disease as example, can be defeat by their intelligence and bravery. Also the advanced high-tech can help them come over the crisis. While the others think that it is so big that the crisis can not be solved. So they give up to fight against it and yield without any effort.

As for me, we must face the crisis bravely and fight against it. For example, some students failed in one exam. Some cried and sad, but some one made up his mind to study hard from then on. I stand on the side of the latter. Only can you change the sorrow into power, you can be winner before the crisis.

Passage4

FEED THE BRAIN,BUT LESS SUGAR

While no single factor has been identified as the cause of Alzheimers it is thought that lifestyle choices, such as diet exercise and sleep habits can all have a significant impact on the fact, research by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine has,so far. suggested that lifestyle changes related to healthy ageing looks more promising than rug studies.

For the last decade or so,researchers have been exploring the link between our modern diets and the increasing prevalence of Alzheimer’s, specifically the connection between sugar and the disease. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated that even a mild elevation of blood sugar is associated with an elevated risk of dementia.

Previous research had shown a higher risk for diabetics in developing Alzheimers more recent research has shed further light on this ,finding an intricate link between insulin resistance and the bodies produce insulin that is necessary for the survival of brain cells, but this process goes awry when a toxic protein ,called ADDL,removes receptors form these cells and renders them insulin resistant. As the ADDLs accumulate, our memory can begin to deteriorate.

So,what should we be feeding our bodies ti give our brain the best change? A diet low in sugar and carbohydrates and high in healthy fats is essential. Opt for real food above processed options and try to keep added sugar levels to a minimum(ideally between 15 and 25 grams a day).Add plenty of good fats like avocados, raw nuts and coconut and other nut oils to the diet and try a high-quality probiotic to optimise the flora in the gut.

76. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as one of the causes of Alzheimers?

Passage 4

Questions 20 to 23 are based on the following passage.

Viktor Frankl, a famous Jewish psychiatrist(精神病医生), wrote his bestselling 1946 book Mans Search for Meaning in nine days about his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. Frankl concluded that the difference between thoseprisoners who had lived and those who had died came down to one thing : Meaning, an insight he came to early in life.

In 1991, the Library of Congress listed Man5s Search for Meaning as one of the 10 most influential books in the United States. It has sold millions of copies worldwide. Now, over twenty years later, the book s ideas—its emphasis on meaning, the value of suffering, and responsibility to something greater than the self—seem to be at odds with our culture, which is more interested in the pursuit of individual happiness than in the search for meaning. But happiness cannot bepursued. It follows. One must have a reason to be happy,”Franklwrote.

According to Gallup, the happiness levels of Americans are at a four-year high. Gallup also reports that nearly 60%of all Americans today feel happy, without a lot of stress or worry. On the other hand, according to the Center for DiseaseControl, about 4 out of 10 Americans have not discovered a satisfying life purpose. 40% either do not think their liveshave a clear sense of purpose or are neutral about whether their lives have purpose. Nearly a quarter of Americans do nothave a strong sense of what makes their lives meaningful.

Research has shown that having purpose and meaning in life increases overall well-being and life satisfaction, improves mental and physical health, and decreases the chances of depression. On top of that, the single-minded pursuit ofhappiness is leaving people less happy, according to recent research.

B. Pursuit of happiness is the most important thing in life.

C. Physical health can be improved if you are happy.

D. Realizing the meaning of life is important to happiness.

Questions 24 to 27 are based on the following passage.

If you’ve ever lost your wallet (钱包), then you know that it’s a very terribleexperience. Most people keep a lotintheir wallets. That’s where they keep their drivers license, their credit cards, and all kinds of other important things. Of course, that’s also where most of us keep our cash.

We all need cash in our lives. However, something called digital currency is slowly replacing cash. A currency is a kind of money. Usually, we use currency when we talk about a country’s money. For example, the UK is the pound, and the USA is the dollar. If something is digital, it only exists on a computer. So “digital currency” means money thatonly existson computers.

Lots of people have digital currency accounts. They use a credit card to change their real money into digital money, and then the money goes into the digital currency account. A lot ofpeople wonder, “Why in the worldshould I change myreal moneyinto digital money? ” This is a fair question, but there’s a good answer. If you want to buy something online, then you usually have to use digital currency. For example, if you’re in China and you want to buy something in Canada, then you’ll have to pay with digital currency.

Many people still don’t trust digital currency. Some people think that if they can’thold their money in their hand, then it doesn’t seem real. These people don’t feel comfortable when they see numbers on a computer screen. The computertells them that their money is safe, but these people don’tfeel safe. Another problem is security. There are hackers all overtheworld. A hacker is a person who steals computer information. If a hacker gets the password of your digital currency account, he or she can steal your money.

You have to decide whether or not you trust this new invention. Just remember one thing: If you want to buy something online, then you probably won’thave achoice. You’ll have to use digital money.

24. The word “fair”( Para. 3) is closest in meaning to__________ .

A. beautiful B. equal C. pleasant D. reasonable

25. Which of the following is probably a hacker according to the passage?

A. A person who uses a computer to steal things.

B. A person who composes computer programs.

C. A person who uses a computer to buy things.

D. A person who owns a lot of digital currency.

26. How do those who don’t trust digital currency think about money?

A. The money on a computer screen is safe.

B. The money in their hand is real.

C. Real money is worth more than digital money.

D. Real money and digital money are the same.

27. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Hacker problems in the world. B. Currencies used in particular countries.

C. A new kind of money. D. Safety of digital currency.

Questions 28 to 31 are based on the following passage.

Zoos are hugely popular attractions for adults and children alike. But are they actually a good thing?

Critics of zoos would argue that animals often suffer physically and mentally by being enclosed (封闭). Even the best artificial environments can^ come close to matching the space and freedom that animals have in their natural environments. Thisenclosure causes many zoo animals to become stressed or mentally ill. Capturing animals in the wild also causes much suffering by splitting up families. Some zoos make animals behave unnaturally. For example, in some parksdolphins (海豚)are forced to perform tricks, who may die decades earlier than their wild relatives. And some even try to kill themselves.

On the other hand, by bringing people and animals together, zoos have the potential to educate the public aboutconservation issues and inspire people to protect animals and their natural environments. Some zoos provide a safe environment for animals which have been mistreated by people, or pets which have been abandoned. Zoos also carry out importantresearch into subjects like animal behavior and how to treat illnesses. One of the most important modern functions of zoos issupporting international breeding(繁殖) programmes, particularly for endangered species(种群). In the wild, some ofthe rarest species have difficulty in finding mates and breeding. A good zoo will enable these species to live and breed insecure environments.

So, are zoos good for animals or not? Perhaps it all depends on how well individual zoos are managed, and the benefits of zooscan surely outweigh their harmful effects. However, it is understandable that many people believe imprisoninganimalsfor any reason is simply wrong.

28. The expression “artificial environments” (Para. 2)is used in contrast to_______________.

A. natural environments B. some zoos

C. breeding programmes D. modern functions

29. Why are dolphins mentioned in Paragraph 2?

A. They are ocean animals.

B. They are good at performing.

C. They are made to behave unnaturally in some parks.

D. They are supported by international breeding programmes.

30. According to the passage, international breeding programmes are particularly important to________.

A. animals in zoos B. split-up families

C. dolphins in parks D. endangered species

31. What is the author’s attitude towards zoos?

A. Negative B. Positive C. Critical D. Understandable

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the following passage.

How many times, when finding yourself in a difficult situation, have you heard something like, “You just need to go somewhere, change your environment, and meet new people.” Upon hearing this, we think such advice can be annoying: going through hard times, you rather expect help, sympathy, or at least something more practical, rather than“You know, you should travel”. However, the surprising truth is that this is probably one of the most useful and practical pieces of advice you can get.

Of course, you cannot abandon everything and set off to go on a world trip. All of us have duties, responsibilities, debts, connections. However, the advice to travel does not necessarily imply something like departing to Nepal and living among monks(僧侣)for years. In fact, small but regular journeys are available almost to everyone, and the positiveeffects they can have on your mental condition and your ability to cope with difficulties are significant.

When you are stressed, your thoughts obviously cannot be positive and optimistic(乐观的).So, whether you want it or not, you will view your life situation from a rather pessimistic perspective(悲观的视角). However, when you board a plane and fly overseas, you almost immediately start to feel your problems fade. “Out of sight, out of mind,’’ as the saying goes. Of course, I am not saying the easiest way to feel better is to escape from problems; I rather mean that taking a break and allowing yourself to breathe in some fresh air can give you a new perspective. Having a good rest is a necessary condition of any recovery, and your mind definitely needs rest from time to time.

Speaking of new perspectives, when travelling, you will inevitably meet a lot of new people. Some of them will become friends of yours; some will remain strangers. Psychologists have known that perhaps the most honest and sincere communication often occurs between strangers; this is called "the companion effect”. Useit to your advantage. Whether youneed advice, help, or a person who would quietly listen to you as you share your hardships, there is no better opportunity to get all this from strangers while travelling. Travelling can not solve your problems but will help you recover from yourmental wounds, get rid of the excessive stress, and give you the skills to deal with your hardships as you return home.

32. While in a difficult situation, people think the suggestion “You just need to gosomewhere”______..

A. annoying B. surprising C. practical D. useful

33. What does the advice to travel really mean in this passage?

A. Finding a temple and living with the monks.

B. Giving up your duties and departing to Nepal.

C. Starting a small journey and getting yourself refreshed.

D. Forgetting everything and starting a trip around the world.

34. What does the word “ it ” ( Para. 4) refer to?

A. A trip. B. The communication. C. A new perspective. D. The companion effect.

35. What is the probable title for this passage?

A. Sincere Communication Is a Way Out of Problems

B. Travelling Offers New Perspectives in Life Situation

C. Going Through Hard Times Needs Help and Sympathy

D. Travelling Is the Best Way to Escape from Problems

All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to be the lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!”

For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hoping. The cupboards in kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to advise her against buying things but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say: “Madam, this is Your Lucky Day. Everything in your basket is free.”

One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk. As she did so, she saw the manager of the supermarket approach her. “Madam,” he said, holding out his hand, “I want to

Deep inside a mountain near Sweetwater in East. Tennessee is a body of water known as the Lost Sea. It is listed by the Guinness Book of Would Records as the world’s largest underground lake. The Lost Sea is part of an extensive and historic cave system called Craighead Caverns.

The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The cave expands into a series of huge rooms from a small opening on the side of the mountain. Approximately one mile from the entrance, in a room called “The Council Room,” many Indian artisfacts have been found. Some of the items discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapons, and jewelry.

For many years there were persistent rumors of a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered until 1905. In that year, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small opening three hundred feet underground. He found himself in a large cave half filled with water.

Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats powered by electric motors. More than thirteen acres of water have been mapped out so far and still no end to the lake has been found. Even though teams of divers have tried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent of it is still unknown.

Passage Three

Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one life’s essentials. Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip.

But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent.

For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast. “Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arrold E. Bender, former professor of the nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”

Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most of the recent work involves children, not adults, “The literature”, says one researcher, Dr. Erresto at the University of Texas, “is poor”.

71. The latest year for which figures could be obtained is _______.

A. the year the author wrote the article B. 1977

C. any year between 1997 and 1983 D. 1983

72. For those who do not take breakfast, the good news is that _______.

A. several studies have been done in the past few years

B. the omission of breakfast does no harm to one’s health

C. adults have especially made studies in this field

D. eating little in the morning is good for health

73. “…nor does giving people breakfast improve performance” means ______.

A. anyone without breakfast does improve his performance

B. not giving people breakfast improve performance

C. having breakfast does not improve performance, either

D. people having breakfast do improve their performance

74. The word “literature” in the last sentence refers to _______.

A. stories, poems, plays, etc. B. written works on a particular subject

C. any printed material D. the modern literature of America

75. What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that _______.

A. breakfast does not affect performance

B. Dr.Erresto is engaged in research work at an institution of higher learning

C. not eating breakfast might affect the health of children

D. Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in London

Passage Four

About 35% of all high school graduates in America continue their education in an institution of higher learning. The word college is used to refer to either a college or a university. These institutions offer four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor Science

(B.S.) degree. Some students attend a junior college (providing only a two-year program) for one to two years before entering a four-year college as a sophomore (二年级生) or junior (三年级生).

It is generally easier to be accepted at a state university than at a private one. Most private schools require strict entrance examinations and a high grade point average (GPA), as well as specific college prep classes in high school. Private schools cost considerably more than state colleges and famous private schools are very expensive. Poorer students can sometimes attend, however, by earning scholarships. Some college graduates go on to earn advanced masters or doctoral degrees in grad (graduate) school. Occupations in certain fields such as law or medicine require such advanced studies.

Since college costs are very high, most students work at part-time jobs. Some have full-time jobs and go to school part-time. Often some will take five or more years to complete a four-year program because of money / job demands on their time.

While the college and work demands take up the great part of a student’s time, most still enjoy social activities. Sports, dances, clubs, movies, and plays are all very popular. However, gathering together for long, philosophical talks at a favorite meeting place on or near the university is probably the most popular activity.

76. College education is _______ in America.

A. quite common B. very rare

C. something difficult D. almost impossible

77. Which of the following is NOT required for entering most private schools.

A. entrance examinations B. taking part in many activities

C. GPA D. college prep classes

78. How can poor students attend private schools?

A. Only by working at part-time jobs. B. Only by working at full-time jobs.

C. Only by earning scholarships. D. All of above.

79. The American college students like to _______ most of all.

A. discuss problems on philosophy B. play balls

C. earn enough money D. go to the cinemas or theatres

80. The best title for this passage is _______.

A. Part-time jobs B. American college

C. Popular activity D. A new system

In Money Everything?

I don’t think money is everything, but we can’t do without it. Fox example, money can’t buy us happiness and a good education. And for another example, money can’t buy us good health and a long life. But we can not live without money. We need it for our daily necessities such as food, clothes and transportation. What’s more, we need it to live a better life. In short, we should learn the value of money and make the most of its advantages
